FAQ

We live in a world of plenty, and yet: 840 million people go hungry each year. 1.2 billion people live on less than $1 a day. 12 million people die each year from a lack of water. Over 30,000 children under the age of five die each day due to hunger and other preventable causes.

Twenty years of war has taken its toll on the healthcare infrastructure of the North-East of Sri Lanka. Infant Moratlity Rate (IMR) is considered a good indicator of level of health of a nation. IMR is defined as the number of deaths of children during their first year of life.

IMR in the island of Sri Lanka in 1985 was 24 and now it has decreased to 15 per 1,000 live births. During the same time period, the IMR in the war-torn areas of Sri Lanka has increased from 11 to 30 per 1,000 live births. For comparison, IMR in USA is 6.7 per 1,000 live births.
