IMHO sees the emphasis on Primary Health Care (PHC)
as the only viable alternative to the more costly traditional
emphasis on acute care services. The hallmark of primary
health care is the community-based and community-supported
health worker, who provides essential health promotion,
disease prevention and curative services.
Enhancing PHC delivery is a principal focus of IMHO's health
programs in Sri Lanka. IMHO has addressed the essential
health care needs of vulnerable persons and communities
through rehabilitating and reconstructing PHC infrastructure
and systems and enhancing quality service delivery through
appropriate technological advancements. By encouraging community
participation and capacity building, IMHO's programs promote
self-reliance and encourage socioeconomic development.
